FUE Technique: Follicular unit extraction at Clinicas Ceta

The F.U.E. technique is the latest hair restoration surgery method. It was first described by Masumi Inaba in Japan in 1988 who introduced the use of a 1-mm needle for extracting follicular units. FUE was successfully conducted on public patients by Dr Ray Woods in Australia. In 2002 it was first described in the medical literature by William R. Rassman and Robert M. Bernstein in their publication “Follicular Unit Extraction: Minimally Invasive Surgery for Hair Transplantation.”

F.U.E. technique is very simple, consists on removing the follicular units from the donor area (harvesting phase), instead of removing a full strip. To this end, we use certain types of circular micro-scalpels with a 0.6 to 0.8 mm diameter (the smallest punch used by anyone), which will remove full hair follicles of 1, 2 or 3 hairs each, then they are maintained in cold serum, until they are placed in the balding area. The incisions are so insignificant that they heal completely in a time period between 24 to 48 hours, without leaving any scar, so the patient´s donor area remains intact to perform future surgeries if necessary.

During the transplantation phase, we use a special tool called implanter, that allows us a easier setting of the grafts in the balding area, reducing the injury of follicles and also improving the follicle direction and the final results. This is another characteristic that differ us from the rest.

Clínicas CETA, in its permanent challenge to provide the latest and most innovative practices on the cosmetic medicine field, was associated in 2003 with DHI Hair Restoration group, where the technique had been performed for some years, and along with one of DHI best surgeons, Dr. Alex Seiadatan, Clinicas Ceta became the first Spanish clinic where F.U.E Technique was developed.

The F.U.E. technique was conceived to eliminate the unaesthetic irreversible linear scars derived from the STRIP Technique.

There are still extremely few surgeons who master Follicular Unit Extraction because the procedure takes considerable time and expense to learn and to develop skills to a high standard. Our medical staff is trained to obtain up to 2000 grafts per surgery day, a very high number, with great final results.

In Clínicas CETA we guarantee growth of 85 per cent of the new transplanted hair. We commit ourselves to transplant without additional cost all those hairs that do not grow 1 year after the surgery. In Clínicas CETA we believe in the quality of our work and set this number (an 85% of transplanted grafts) because we understand that approximately 15% of the transplanted follicles of the scalp are in resting (Telogen) phase.

We require only that the patient strictly follows our post-operative indications and the revisions determined by Clínicas CETA (1st month, 4th month and 8th month after the surgery) in order to obtain the best result.
